No. Even though it all comes from the sea, some products generate far more greenhouse gas emissions than others. In fact, there can be a big difference in carbon footprint between foods within the same category.

More and more consumers want to understand the environmental impact of the food they buy every day. Knowing a product's price or nutritional value is no longer enough. People also want to know how it was produced, what resources it used, and what impact it has on the planet.

That's why tools like carbon footprint measurement and eco-labels are becoming increasingly important in the food industry.

A carbon footprint measures the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout a product's life cycle. This includes stages such as production, processing, transportation, storage, and distribution. With this information, it's possible to compare foods and understand which ones have a greater environmental impact.

In this edition of the ClearPrint Emissions Ranking, we look at different types of seafood based on their CO₂ equivalent emissions per 100 grams, along with their approximate protein content.

Mollusks rank as the lowest-impact option in this ranking. According to the data used, they generate approximately 200 grams of CO₂e per 100 grams of product and provide between 9 and 12 grams of protein. This makes them one of the lower-emission choices among the seafood analyzed.

Next comes white fish, at approximately 500 grams of CO₂e per 100 grams and around 20–22 grams of protein. This group sits in the middle in terms of emissions and remains an important source of protein in our diets.

Further up the ranking is tuna, with emissions of approximately 600 to 700 grams of CO₂e per 100 grams and around 25 grams of protein.

Salmon has emissions of around 879 grams of CO₂e per 100 grams of product and approximately 22 grams of protein. In many cases, these emissions can be linked to aquaculture, feed, and transportation.

Finally, shrimp has the highest emissions in this ranking, at approximately 1,200 grams of CO₂e per 100 grams and around 24 grams of protein.

This data shows how foods we often see as similar can have very different environmental impacts. Factors such as production methods, energy use, transportation, and processing can significantly influence each product's final emissions.

Today, much of this information isn't available to consumers when they shop. That's where eco-labels and environmental measurement tools come in, turning complex data into simple, visual, and easy-to-understand information.

Environmental transparency is becoming an increasingly important trend worldwide. In many international markets, especially in Europe, consumers and regulators are demanding more information on the sustainability and carbon footprint of food products.

This is a major opportunity for food companies looking to stand out, get ahead of future regulations, and clearly communicate their sustainability efforts.

At ClearPrint, we aim to make this kind of information more accessible to consumers and businesses through carbon footprint measurement, eco-labeling, and environmental communication tools for food.

Understanding seafood emissions is part of understanding how different foods can have very different environmental impacts.

Discover our news story: “La diferencia en emisiones entre carne, pescado y más: el impacto ambiental de cada elección” and find out how emissions vary across different types of food.

Want to know the carbon footprint of your products?
