Every June 17, the world observes Desertification and Drought Day, a date promoted by the United Nations to raise awareness about land degradation and water scarcity, two environmental challenges that affect millions of people worldwide.
Why should we care?
More than 95% of our food depends on soil to be produced. When soils degrade, their ability to store water, capture carbon, and support crops declines, affecting both food security and biodiversity.
On top of that, droughts are becoming more frequent and intense in many parts of the world, including Chile, which has faced prolonged periods of water scarcity over the past decade.
What does carbon footprint have to do with it?
Food production generates greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. In turn, climate change increases the risk of drought and speeds up land degradation.
That's why measuring carbon footprint not only reveals a product's emissions, but also helps identify opportunities to use resources more efficiently and reduce environmental impacts across the entire production chain.
Our contribution:
At ClearPrint, we help food companies measure and manage the carbon footprint of their products using methodologies based on international standards such as ISO 14067 and ISO 14040/44.
This information makes it possible to:
✅ Identify the stages with the highest emissions.
✅ Spot opportunities to improve production processes.
✅ Move toward more sustainable food systems.
✅ Transparently communicate environmental information through eco-labels.
Small Choices, Big Impacts
Combating desertification and drought requires large-scale action, but also informed decisions from businesses and consumers.
Understanding the environmental impact of the products we consume is an important step toward building food systems that are more resilient and better prepared for future climate challenges.
