Plastic Free July and International Plastic Bag Free Day: Small Actions to Reduce Environmental Impact

Every July, millions of people around the world take part in Plastic Free July, a global movement that aims to reduce single-use plastic consumption through simple changes in everyday life.

The initiative encourages people to replace disposable products with reusable alternatives, such as cloth bags, water bottles, cups, food containers, or cutlery. While these actions may seem small, when many people adopt them, they help reduce waste and the unnecessary use of resources. Beyond the monthly challenge, Plastic Free July aims to build habits that last all year round.

July 3: International Plastic Bag Free Day

As part of this movement, International Plastic Bag Free Day is observed every July 3 to raise awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastic bags.

Many of these bags are used for just a few minutes, but they can remain in the environment for decades before fully breaking down. When they aren't properly managed, they can end up in rivers, beaches, and oceans, harming biodiversity and breaking apart into microplastics that persist in ecosystems.

Using fewer of them is one of the simplest ways to cut down on waste.

Small choices that can make a difference

Adopting more sustainable habits doesn't require drastic changes. Some easy actions to start with include:

  • Bringing reusable bags when you go shopping.
  • Using reusable bottles or mugs.
  • Avoiding products with excessive plastic packaging.
  • Choosing reusable or recyclable packaging whenever possible.
  • Reusing materials before throwing them away.

These choices help reduce demand for single-use plastics and encourage more responsible consumption.

How does this relate to carbon footprint?

The manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of plastic products generate greenhouse gas emissions throughout their entire life cycle.

While using less plastic won't eliminate your carbon footprint on its own, it can be part of a broader strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of consumption and production.

Understanding these impacts helps us make more informed decisions and move toward more sustainable production systems.

ClearPrint's role

At ClearPrint, we help companies and organizations understand the environmental impact of their products through carbon footprint measurement and life cycle assessment.

Having data-driven information makes it possible to identify opportunities for improvement, reduce emissions, and transparently communicate the environmental performance of products.

Every informed decision is a step toward more sustainable production and consumption.
